Be The Change.

Building Community Foundation Incs

Our mission is to strengthen communities by investing in youth development, celebrating and uplifting local businesses, and advancing the arts as a catalyst for education, wellness, culture, and economic growth. Through charitable giving, strategic partnerships, and community-driven initiatives, we support nonprofit organizations that create meaningful opportunities for young people, empower neighborhood businesses, and expand access to artistic and cultural experiences for all.

We believe thriving communities are built when youth are inspired, entrepreneurs are supported, and the arts are accessible, valued, and integrated into everyday life. Our commitment is to foster equity, creativity, collaboration, and long-term impact by funding programs and initiatives that enrich lives, preserve culture, and strengthen community connections. June 19th!

Start the 2026 Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour.

June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18, 2026

As the fiscal agent for the Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour, the Building Community Foundation Inc., is able to support the arts in the Bronzeville community.

The Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour is one of Chicago’s most celebrated neighborhood arts experiences — a free, community-centered cultural tour that brings hundreds of patrons into the historic Bronzeville neighborhood aboard two double-decker buses to explore galleries, studios, music, food, and Black cultural history.

The tour runs on the third Friday of each month from June through September, transforming Bronzeville into an open-air cultural corridor. Riders hop on and off the buses throughout the evening to visit participating galleries and cultural institutions.

A major anchor of the experience is Gallery Guichard, which has helped shape the district’s contemporary arts identity. Other participating venues over the years have included:

  • Blanc Gallery

  • Faie Afrikan Art

  • South Side Community Art Center (Currently being remodeled)

  • Bronzeville Artist Lofts

The tours are designed as more than gallery visits. They blend:

  • live music and DJs

  • artist talks and demonstrations

  • spoken word and performance

  • neighborhood history storytelling

  • Black cultural tourism

  • community networking and economic support for local businesses

The double-decker buses themselves are part of the attraction. Two buses travel different routes through the neighborhood, allowing patrons to experience multiple cultural hubs in one evening. Docents onboard share stories about Bronzeville’s legacy as a center of Black arts, jazz, literature, activism, and entrepreneurship.

One of the most powerful aspects of the tour is how it reconnects people to Bronzeville’s historic significance and arts movements. Riders hear about:

  • the legacy of Dr. Margaret Burroughs, Ida B. Wells

  • the Great Migration

  • Housed in the famous Jones Brothers Building

  • Adjacent to the historic Palm Tavern

  • the long tradition of Black visual arts on the South Side

  • the home of Gospel Music

As Frances Guichard of Gallery Guichard explained in the Chicago Sun-Times, the event is about “connecting people with their culture and history” while bringing visitors from across the city into Bronzeville.

The tour has grown into a significant cultural tourism event for Chicago’s South Side. Reports indicate the season can draw thousands of visitors annually and has become a signature summer arts experience in the city.

For artists and galleries, the trolley tour also functions as:

  • a collector-development platform

  • a tourism driver

  • a community economic engine

  • a public arts activation model

  • a way to increase visibility for Black artists and businesses

The atmosphere is festive, intergenerational, and immersive — with patrons moving from buses into galleries, restaurants, boutiques, and live performances throughout the evening.
